Returning Hoops boost Strachan's defensive options

Andreas Hinkel and Mark Wilson have returned to first-team training with Celtic in a boost to manager Gordon Strachan's full-back options.

German right-back Hinkel, signed in a £1.9million deal from Sevilla, limped out of the Parkhead club's 1-0 SPL win over Kilmarnock on January 19 with a thigh strain and has missed their last two matches.

Wilson has been out of action since September, but is now closing in on a return to fitness following knee surgery from renowned Colorado specialist Dr Richard Steadman.

On the way back: Andreas Hinkel

Hinkel could now be ready for Sunday's SPL trip to face Aberdeen at Pittodrie, although Strachan was delighted with the debut performance of youngster Paul Caddis in last weekend's 5-1 Scottish Cup win over Kilmarnock.

"There are some individuals coming back, which is good," said Strachan. "Mark Wilson and Andreas Hinkel are back training, while Cillian Sheridan has also returned this week after a long layoff.

"That's three new bodies back with the group and they all need a lot of work. Ben Hutchinson has also joined up with the squad this week, so we'll gently ease them all in."

Right-back has been a jinxed position for Celtic this season, with Jean-Joel Perrier-Doumbe also a long-term absentee.

The emergence of Caddis has, though, eased the need to rush Hinkel back into action after the 19-year-old's composed display at Rugby Park. Celtic reserve-team coach Willie McStay believes that showing will act as an inspiration to the next generation of Parkhead kids seeking to progress to the first-team squad.

"First of all, we are all absolutely delighted for Paul," said McStay. "In football, it doesn't matter how talented you are — you will always need breaks.

"Paul has had a taste of the first team since pre-season and was going to be making his debut a few months ago when he got injured. That was a big blow for him, but he has just worked away and I was delighted to see him make his debut and play the way he can.

"He showed his natural attributes and showed what type of player he is."
