RFL determined to stop 'chicken-wing' tackle which dislocates shoulders ruining the game

The RFL are determined not to allow the 'chicken wing' tackle, which has been outlawed in Australia's NRL, to creep into British rugby league.

Former referee Stuart Cummings, now the RFL's match officials director, phoned the NRL's Greg McCallum for clarification of what constitutes the illegal tactic.

Newton: 'Found guilty of behaviour contrary to the true spirit of the game'

The 'chicken wing' is a wrestling technique aimed at slowing down the play-the-ball but could easily lead to a player having his shoulder dislocated.

The RFL's disciplinary panel found Hull KR's Australian second rower Clint Newton guilty of 'behaviour contrary to the true spirit of the game' and fined him £300 after an incident involving Bradford prop Andy Lynch in Sunday's Super League game.

Lynch claimed yesterday: 'I feared the worst. As soon as he grabbed my arm and locked it I knew what was coming.

'I had to resist or my shoulder would have popped.'

Bradford captain Paul Deacon has signed a new two-year contract which will keep him at the club until 2010.
