Richards tells flashy Quins to toughen up

Dean Richards, the Harlequins director of rugby, has told his free-scoring players they have to learn to "grind out" Guinness Premiership victories — starting with Worcester at Sixways tonight.

The Worcester pack are one of the biggest in the Premiership and they will aim to bludgeon Quins to a third successive league defeat after Richards' men conspired to lose tight matches both at Gloucester and at home to London Irish.

The former England and Leicester No8 was revered during his playing days for being able to strangle a match by securing possession and refusing to give it up — an approach that needs to be grafted on to the current Quins game plan.

Afterall, as they discovered against Irish, taking a 20-3 lead counts for little if you fail to shut up shop in the face of determined opponents who eventually ran out 28-27 winners.

Richards said: "Sometimes you have to grind out a win and Worcester will be a difficult proposition on their own pitch where they place a huge emphasis on robust forward play.

"We have a huge amount of talent and ambition in our squad but sometimes you need to sit back during a game and change tactics to increase pressure on the opposition. It is this game understanding that we need to work on."

Richards has made just one change to the starting line up from the Irish defeat with Chris Robshaw coming in at blindside flanker, to replace the injured Nick Easter while Charlie Amesbury moves on to the bench to replace the injured Tom Williams.
