Rivals seek a curb on Rose route to the top

Justin Rose might have provided a nice feelgood story when he won the European Tour's Order of Merit with his final gasp last year. But it clearly didn't sit well with the rump of the Tour's membership.

Most — quite rightly, it has to be said — looked at the fact his win was based largely on his earnings in America and thought it wrong.

At a meeting in July it is almost certain that the minimum number of events required to be a European Tour member will rise from 11 to at least 13.

"It's hardly asking a lot to play what is basically once a month in Europe," said Colin Montgomerie, a member of the European Tour's players' committee, who will make a recommendation ahead of the July meeting.

"When I was winning my eight Orders of Merit it was because of what I did in Europe, not what happened in America."

The increase might cause difficulty for those with dual European and U.S. memberships like Rose, who played 12 counting events last year.

But, given that the three American majors and all three World Championship events played in the U.S. count towards the European total, it is still not asking a lot.

Committee member Paul McGinley raised another important issue.

"We need our bigger players to commit to some of the bread-and-butter Continental tournaments like the Irish and French Opens because right now we're in danger of losing them," he said.
