Hot favourite John McGuinness blew the opposition away to win the Bennetts Superbike TT - the opening race at the Centenary Isle of Man Festival.

The Morecambe rider had set the fastest time in practice and showed his class to triumph on his HM Plant Honda by 26 seconds from Hydrex Honda's Guy Martin, with Ian Hutchinson on an HM Plant Honda in third.

McGuinness, 34, made it 12 victories in total on the island, which sees him rise to third place outright on the all-time list behind Mike Hailwood (14) and the legendary Joey Dunlop (26).

Despite setting off third, McGuinness quickly took the lead on the first lap, with Martin his closest challenger and Hutchinson settling down in third spot.

The race started later than planned due to poor visibility, but the conditions did not stop McGuinness setting a new Superbike lap record speed on lap two of 128.041mph.

And he cruised home with a final lap time of 17min 53sec to record a winning time of one hour 48.11sec - at an average speed of 125.550mph.

Martin Finnegan claimed fourth place, Ian Lougher was fifth and Ryan Farquhar sixth.

In the Bavaria Sidecar TT Race 'A', the combination of Dave Molyneux and Rick Long narrowly beat John Holden and Andrew Winkle. Steve Norbury and Scott Parnell claimed third.
