Rob Key back in frame for Test recall

22 April 2008
Rob Key is happy to be back on England's radar after disappearing off the international screen more than three years ago.
The Kent opener and captain is among 26 players named in the performance squad, meaning the selectors believe he has a chance of appearing in either Test or limited-overs cricket against New Zealand and South Africa this summer.
"It's nice to be recognised by the selectors," said Key. "Unfortunately, it doesn't mean you are actually playing for England; you've still got to go out there and score a lot of runs, but that's the way it should be."
Key, 29 next month, looked to have a big future when he made a Test double century against the West Indies at Lord's in 2004. But the following winter's tour of South Africa did not go well for him and he was discarded after averaging only 31 across 15 matches.
"I think I'm a better batsman than when I played for England before," said Key, who made only five one-day appearances with a top score of 19.
"Hopefully, I can fulfil the goal of playing for England again."
