Robson is closing in on £4m Beattie

Bryan Robson is lining up an audacious bid to take Everton misfit James Beattie to Sheffield United.

Robson is determined to find a proven target man as the focal point for his attack this season as he bids to get United back into the Premier League at the first attempt.

Wanted: James Beattie

Beattie has struggled at Everton since his £6million move from Southampton and his confidence has taken a bashing with the fact he has not scored a goal from open play since March 2006 — but Robson believes he and assistant Brian Kidd can re-shape Beattie into the England international he once was.

Beattie, at Everton's training camp in Los Angeles yesterday, said: "Last year was a bad season for me. I won't shy away from that fact. It's the first season my goals total hasn't got into double figures. But who is going to look backwards?"

Blackburn and Middlesbrough have both expressed interest in Beattie but as back-up if other deals fall through.

Everton manager David Moyes is demanding £4m for the 28-year-old and needs the cash for his own rebuilding but Robson will not be put off by that figure as he looks to add two more Premier League quality players to his squad.
