Roddick’s new plans go like clockwork

Andy Roddick can legitimately claim to have had the best preparation for Wimbledon compared to the other pretenders to Roger Federer's crown.

The American will play his fifth competitive grasscourt match when he appears in the final of the Artois Championships at Queen's Club this afternoon.

Final stretch: Andy Roddick

His plans, drawn in collaboration with his coach Jimmy Connors, have unfolded with the precision of a Swiss timepiece since his early French Open elimination.

Federer, the four-times Wimbledon champion, has been undergoing private reparations after losing in the final of the French Open at Roland Garros last Sunday.

The world No1 has chosen to be locked from public scrutiny, cancelling his usual grasscourt rehearsal in Halle, Germany.

Rafael Nadal, who defeated Federer in Paris, causing a deep wound in the psyche of the Swiss, is at home in Majorca after fatigue contributed to his defeat at Queen's Club after three wins.

Others who travelled in hope to west London and left with fewer matches than they would have liked included Novak Djokovic, Lleyton Hewitt, Marat Safin and Britain's Tim Henman.

But Roddick, 24, a threetimes winner at Queen's and twice a runner-up at Wimbledon, maintained his form yesterday by eclipsing Russia's Dmitry Tursonov 6-4, 7-5. He will play Nicolas Mahut in the final after his 6-3, 6-7 defeat of fellow Frenchman Arnaud Clement.

Later in the day, Tim Henman and Lleyton Hewitt were beaten in the quarter-finals of the doubles by Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor.

The British number two, who lost in the singles to Marin Cilic earlier this week, was never in the game as he and his Australian partner were beaten 6-1 6-4 by the number four seeds.
