Ronaldo plea to Real Madrid: Pay up and I’m yours

Cristiano Ronaldo's departure from Manchester United moved a step closer last night after admitting he is ready to quit Old Trafford for Real Madrid.

As Sportsmail revealed on Wednesday, Ronaldo has set his heart on a move to Real despite United's insistence that he will not be allowed to leave.

Last night the 23-year- old Portugal winger made his most definitive statement yet when he virtually told Real to sort out the details of the deal with United that could cost them a world record £70million.

Making a point: Cristiano Ronaldo wants to be a Real Madrid player but says his destiny is not in his hands.

Quoted on a Brazilian website, Ronaldo said: 'I would like to play for Real Madrid but only if it is true they are ready to pay Manchester United what they have been saying they will.

However, it does not depend on me.' Ronaldo's management company were given the chance to distance the player from the comments last night but declined.

Ronaldo, Footballer of the Year and scorer of 42 goals for United in the season just ended, said last weekend that he would give some indication as to his plans in 'two or three days' and this could well be it.

With Portugal about to open their Euro 2008 campaign against Turkey tomorrow, Ronaldo also stated on the website that he would be making no further comment.

He said: 'It is important to send a message. From now on I will not talk about this until the end of the Euros. It is not worth asking me because I will not reply.'

United have already threatened to report Real to FIFA if they continue their public courtship of the player. It remains to be seen if Real step up their efforts to land him or whether Ronaldo himself asks for a transfer.

Last night former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy suggested his old team-mate should join him at Real.

Van Nistelrooy said: 'For Madrid it would be a very important signing because it is a club that signs the best players in the world and that is what he is. Cristiano can give so many things to the team. He is young and he has everything.'

A United spokesman said: 'Our position has not changed. Ronaldo will not be leaving.'
