Rookie gifts Aussies runs

Australia capitalised on some poor South African fielding to set them a challenging 272 for victory in the opening one-day international in Melbourne today.

After winning the toss, Australia reached 271 for eight in ideal conditions for batting on the back of half-centuries from international rookies Shaun Marsh (79) and David Hussey (52).

However, Hussey should have been caught out on 10 by one-day debutant Vaughn van Jaarsveld, who also missed a chance to dismiss Ricky Ponting (46) on 33.

In the first of five one-dayers, the tourists reached 43 for two after 10 overs.
