Rookie Kirk to take on Part in World Championship final

Rookie Kirk Shepherd will take on Canada's John Part in the final of the Ladbrokes.com PDC World Championship at Alexandra Palace on New Year's Day.

Part secured his place after a resounding 6-2 victory over Kevin Painter.

The 41-year-old never looked in danger against his English opponent as a clinical display ensured the match came to a swift conclusion.

Living the dream: rookie Kirk Shepherd beat Wayne Mardle to get in the final

Painter had dumped out reigning champion Raymond van Barneveld in the third round but he was severely outclassed by Part, who never looked back after storming into a two-set lead early on.

Part will now have the opportunity to claim his second World Championship title after his triumph in 2003 made him the first non-British player to claim the trophy.

He has been in imperious form during his run to the final and saw off the threat of James Wade in a tense quarter-final yesterday - eventually coming through 5-4.

Part will take on Shepherd after a 6-4 victory over Wayne Mardle in the second semi-final.

Shepherd had taken his place in the last four with a victory over Peter Manley, while Mardle had made it through to the semis after a sensational victory over Phil 'The Power' Taylor.

Maple magic: Part will now have the opportunity to claim his second World Championship title

Part is a past winner of this event - at the Circus Tavern in 2003 - but admitted he still faced a "big match" to beat 21-year-old Shepherd.

"I have the advantage in the sense that I've won the world championship before," Part told Sky Sports.

"It's always been in my plans to win it for a third time, but I'm still one big match away from that."

Shepherd added: "I'm on cloud nine. I believe I can beat anyone on my day and I'm here to win this now.

"John has beaten me once 3-2 in Holland so he won't fear me, but I won't fear him."
