Routledge: Villa will see the best of me - and I'm honoured to be here

Wayne Routledge is optimistic Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill can bring the best out of him after moving from Tottenham in a £1.5million deal.

The 23-year-old midfielder has put pen to paper on an 18 month contract and is looking to rebuild his career after a frustrating spell at White Hart Lane.

New start: Wayne Routledge never got going at Spurs

Injuries and the emergence of Aaron Lennon meant Routledge made only a limited contribution in his two and a half years at Spurs after moving from Crystal Palace and he went out on loan to Portsmouth and Fulham.

Routledge said: "I am ecstatic. I can't wait to start my Aston Villa career. It is a massive club and Martin O'Neill is a fantastic manager and he has done great things here already.

"The manager's record at bringing players through is amazing. If he can do the same with me, it will be good for Aston Villa.

"To even be linked with a club like Villa and to be here signed is a massive privilege.

"I am honoured. I just want to prove myself now. It is a forward step for me. When I heard about Villa's interest, there was only one club I wanted to sign for.

"Everyone has seen how well Villa have done this season. Martin has signed some good players in his time here and he has bought the best out of his team. I hope he can do that with me.

"We have some exciting months ahead. Now, the hard work begins. I want to do well for Martin for showing faith in me and for the supporters."

O'Neill was today hoping to complete the signing of Chivas USA keeper Brad Guzan in a £2million deal and was still in the market for a striker.

If O'Neill signs a striker that could lead the way for Luke Moore joining Rangers in a £3.5million deal.
