'Rubbish' Beckham is booed by fans
06 August 2007
A huge section of the 22,522 sell-out crowd at Toronto FC's 0-0 draw with Galaxy booed when Beckham, wearing a suit and tie, was shown on the big screen.
One fan wore a T-shirt saying: "David Beckham is rubbish" while others held placards complaining about spending 120 dollars (£60) for a game which did not feature Major League Soccer's marketing sensation.
On Saturday, Beckham said he cannot put weight on the ankle or turn without pain and is at least 10 days from being able to start.
The 32-year-old appears likely to miss England's friendly against Germany on 22 August and national coach Steve McClaren will be concerned about his fitness ahead of the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Russia next month.
Since joining the Galaxy, Beckham has been limited to a 12-minute cameo appearance against Chelsea.
Galaxy head coach Frank Yallop believes the media circus surrounding his team will ease the minute Beckham starts playing again.
Boo-ted: LA Galaxy fans spell out their anger at another no show
Yallop said: "What we're trying to do is get him on the field. Once he gets on the field it's going to kind of go away I think. The game was going on and there are people in front of me taking photographs. We need to get away from that and we're trying to get him on the field."
Last week, fans at Galaxy's match with FC Dallas in the SuperLiga, held up banners stating "Bench it like Beckham", referring to the new signing's residence on the sidelines.
Another disgruntled supporter held up his handiwork: "Welcome to America where people like you get paid to do nothing."
Beckham said: "All that is on my mind at the moment is getting myself fit. If I'm fit, obviously I have to play a few games before I can even think of going home to England to play for my country."
