Rubens Barrichello to reveal Indy decision soon
02 February 2012
Rubens Barrichello has promised to quickly make up his mind with regard to a potential move to IndyCar.
The Formula One veteran, released by Williams at the end of last season to bring to an end his 19-year career in the sport, enjoyed a successful test this week with KV Racing.
The 39-year-old, who competed in an F1 record 326 grands prix, was swiftly on a par in terms of pace with KV's main driver Tony Kanaan at Florida's Sebring International Raceway.
Barrichello now needs to do some soul searching as he always promised wife Silvana, who joined him at the test, he would never race on oval circuits.
There is a possibility Barrichello could sign a deal to drive on the regular racing circuits alone given IndyCar's 15-race season includes only four ovals, in particular the renowned Indianapolis Motor Speedway that stages the Indy 500.
Speaking to O Estado de S.Paulo, Barrichello said: "I don't know how things are going to move forward now.
"I have not spoken with (team co-owner) Jimmy Vasser about racing in the season.
"What is certain is that it (the speculation) will not last long.
"Whether I race or not will be known soon. There is a lot of work still to do and KV needs to know its driver."
IndyCar chief executive Randy Bernard is hopeful Barrichello will sign up, and has vowed to do all he can to help him switch.
With the sport still recovering from the death of Dan Wheldon in last season's final race in Las Vegas, the sport is in need of a good news story, and Barrichello could provide it.
"He's a champion, a driver who would be a tremendous addition to a series. Indycar would love to have him," said Bernard.
"If there is a transition, I want him to know we're here to help him."
