Rugby fans splash the cash - Sale's on clothes, Newcastle on bling, Leeds on books and Worcester on charity - but what about Wasps?

Football's Barclays Premier League may be where the real money is - but the most affluent fans are in rugby's Guinness Premiership.

They spend more than their round-ball counterparts on fashion, music and jewellery - and have an avid passion for DIY.

The findings are a result of a survey by Barclays Commercial Bank carried out late last year on over 23,000 rugby fans.

Rugby fans are big on fashion, surprisingly more so than football supporters, spending on average £624 a year extra per club (£4,539 total) on clothes than the average Barclays Premier League fan - perhaps taking their lead from the stylish new generation of English rugby talent like Danny Cipriani, Paul Sackey and Mathew Tait.

Rugby fans also spend £263 more a year at the off-licence (£686 total) than Barclays Premier League football supporters, and they like their bling, grossing an average £1,177 a year on jewellery, £25 more than football fans. The research looked at fans from the 12 rugby Premiership clubs across the country in November and December 2007 and reveals:

• House-proud Sale fans are ranked first for spending £91 per month on DIY and over £364 per month at the supermarket.

• Sale fans are also the most fashion savvy, topping the league for annual menswear spend with £1,139, perhaps following the cool style of French icon Sebastian Chabal?

• Jonny Wilkinson's Newcastle fans spend the most out of all 12 clubs on jewellery, over £113 a month.

• Wasps fans also top the poll for shopping online with over £560 per year.

• Tuneful Gloucester fans are the biggest music lovers, averaging £31 a month at music stores.

• Tech savvy Leicester supporters lead the charge on computer spend with over £86 a month.

• Leeds fans spend the most on books, an impressive £413 a year. • Saracens supporters love home entertainment, leading the charge with spend on radios, hi-fis and televisions - over £1838 a year.

• Although Worcester fans are the last to splash out on new clothes, they are the most charitable, topping the league table for donations to good causes, with over £500 per year.

• You were most likely to receive a card or present from a Harlequins supporter over Christmas, who topped the spend on gift and card shops in the run up to Christmas with £220 in December.

The study was carried out as part of ongoing research by rugby sponsor Barclays Commercial Bank into the spending habits of fans.

Barclays Commercial Bank is sponsor of Sky Sports Rugby Union Coverage for the 2007/08 season. Richard French, Marketing Director, Barclays Commercial Bank: "As an avid Harlequins fan it was interesting to see that we topped the list for spend over the Christmas period, something which I can definitely relate to!

"Due to our partnership with Sky Sports rugby and our sponsorship of the Churchill Cup this year, we feel an affinity with rugby fans and this research enables us to appreciate what fans are interested in off the pitch."
