Rugby league showpiece goes ahead after storms

The rugby league World Cup Final between Australia and New Zealand will go ahead tomorrow despite the worst storms to hit south-east Queensland in 20 years.

Storms have raged on and off all week. Trees have been uprooted, houses smashed and one woman died after being trapped in a car as it was swept away in a torrent.

Hailstones, some the size of golf balls, fell on Brisbane city centre last night and more heavy rain is forecast for the weekend.

Australia suffered a setback today when front row forward Steve Price was forced out of the final. The 33-year-old tore his left calf muscle during the team's final training session.
