Andy Farrell handed England coaching role for Six Nations

Saracens coach Andy Farrell today joined Stuart Lancaster and Graham Rowntree as the men who will take charge of England's Six Nations title defence following the World Cup debacle.

England Saxons manager Lancaster was heavily touted for the role while Rowntree, scrum coach under former boss Martin Johnson, was praised for his work in New Zealand.

However, the appointment of Farrell, who was part of England's 2007 World Cup squad, is a major surprise as he only took over at Sarries last season.

Farrell and director of rugby Mark McCall guided the club to a first Premiership title and now the English champions have agreed to let him help repair the damage caused by the Cup campaign.

There is no place for forwards coach John Wells or Mike Ford, the defence coach, with Farrell expected to have a major influence in this area. Lancaster said: "I am confident that we can work well together as a coaching team."

Rugby Football Union chiefs say the temporary coaches will have a shot at the full-time positions but only Rowntree is likely to be considered alongside the favoured head coaching duo of Nick Mallett and Wayne Smith.
