Brendan Venter reveals why Saracens no longer try fans' patience

With all the talk about the Wembley pitch this week it has been largely overlooked that tomorrow's Guinness Premiership match between Saracens and London rivals Harlequins is a hugely significant one.

The hosts are anxious to cement their place in the play-offs while Quins need points to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for next season's Heineken Cup.

Despite so much riding on the game, recent form suggests neither team will adopt a cautious approach but will instead unleash the type of running rugby that will delight more than 40,000 supporters.

Sarries have thrown off the restricted game plan that took them to the top of the Premiership earlier this season but drew boos from disgruntled fans and embraced an attacking approach that has been Quins' trademark.

Proof of a change in emphasis is that Saracens have scored 13 tries in their last three league matches compared to the 16 they managed in their other 16 top-flight contests this season.

The harder pitches have helped their running game but Brendan Venter always insisted the early-season system had to be limited to accommodate a team featuring a number of new players.

The director of rugby said: "The building blocks of our game are in place and with the change in interpretation by referees, which is helping attacking rugby, we have decided to play this way. Early in the season we weren't good enough even though we had been practising in pre-season to perform like this and that is why I am so excited about where we can take this club.

"Our vision is to win the Premiership and if we want to achieve that target we have to win games like Quins, Leicester and Northampton which are the three we have remaining. If we don't make the play-offs by finishing top four then we will just have to come back stronger as a club next season."

While Mike Brown and George Lowe have combined for 10 Quins tries this season, hooker Schalk Brits is the Sarries top scorer with four tries which suggests it is time for the club's backs to rise to the Wembley occasion.

Venter is still operating his rotation policy that guarantees players a run in the team which means kickers Derick Hougaard and Glen Jackson have both scored 119 points in a similar number of games. That combined total of 238 is hugely impressive given Newcastle's Jimmy Gopperth is the Premiership's top scorer with 181.

Sarries are still without England captain Steve Borthwick but he is expected to be fit after his knee injury to face Leicester on 8 May.

London Wasps travel to Worcester tomorrow where they have failed to win on five previous visits but have been boosted by the return after neck surgery of Phil Vickery.

The former England captain and tight-head prop is back in the match squad, desperate to prove he can be a force at the highest level. However, his priority for now is helping Wasps into the play-offs. Vickery said: "If I was fortunate enough to be wanted by England after getting back into action then that would be fantastic but let's think about a first game for Wasps.

"I would love to play for England again and if Martin Johnson believes I can be of use then that would be great. If not, then I am very proud of what I have achieved."

London Irish will be aiming to strengthen their place in the top four when they host Leeds on Sunday.
