Chris Robshaw in pole position to lead England after Tom Wood's blow

Harlequins captain Chris Robshaw is a step closer to leading England in their opening Six Nations clash with Scotland at Murrayfield on February 4 after Northampton today confirmed flanker Tom Wood has had a scan on a foot injury that could rule him out of the opening championship match.

Wood, who is vying with Robshaw to replace the retired Lewis Moody as national captain, has undergone the scan on the foot and Northampton are awaiting the results.

It is understood that Wood is expected to sit out at least two weeks of rugby which would mean he could not take part in the crucial four-day England training session that starts at West Park Leeds RFC which starts on January 23.

Robshaw, who has only one England cap, has been outstanding for Harlequins, leading them to the top of the Premiership and will be captain against Gloucester in the Heineken Cup match at home on Saturday.

A Northampton club spokesman said: "Tom Wood has undergone a scan on his foot and we are now awaiting the medical."
