Dave Wilson sidelined after fracturing his jaw
08 February 2012
England prop Dave Wilson has been ruled out for at least four weeks after fracturing his jaw, opening the way for uncapped Harlequin Joe Marler to play some part in the Six Nations championship.
With Wilson out of the picture, Matt Stevens of Saracens becomes the back up tight head prop to Dan Cole with Marler next in line behind London Irish loose head Alex Corbisiero who is recovering from a dead leg sustained against Scotland.
Wilson, 26-year-old, was released from Six Nations duty to play for Bath and suffered the injury in their LV=Cup victory over Exeter last Sunday.
Bath director of rugby Sir Ian McGeechan said: "He'll have to have an operation on it,It means he can keep training while he's recovering but it's disappointing for him as he's in good form."
Wilson, who has 19 international caps, was included in Stuart Lancaster's 32-man squad for the Six Nations opening match and was expected to train this week with England before they take on Italy on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Toby Flood has been released to play for Leicester this weekend but Lee Dickson is still part of England's plans for the match in Rome.
Flood made his comeback from knee ligament damage for the Tigers last Saturday and he spent the last two days training with the national team. But interim England coach Stuart Lancaster has decided fly-half Flood needs another game under his belt before making his Test return and released him to play for Leicester against Exeter.
Charlie Hodgson was limited to non-contact work in training today as he recovers from a blow to the shoulder but he is set to retain his place at fly-half for the game at the Stadio Olimpico.
Dickson was initially expected to be sidelined for four weeks after fracturing a bone in his hand during his Test debut off the bench in England's 13-6 win against Scotland.
