Hampton land Standard award after thrilling Argentine win

A thrilling win over Argentinian opposition helped Hampton clinch the Standard's schools rugby team of the month award.

The south-west London team followed up narrow victories over Tiffin and Emanuel with a one-point defeat of touring side Regatas de Bella Vista U19s.

It follows a topsy-turvy year for Hampton, who were knocked out of the Daily Mail cup in the fifth round by Skinners, our January award winners. Both schools receive vouchers from rugby leisure kit company frontup.co.uk.

Skinners have had one of their best seasons for years, playing strong team rugby which took them close to Twickenham before being knocked out by finalists RGS Newcastle.

Hampton coach Zoran Higgins said: "We set ourself a target of winning the last three matches to pull the season round which we did."

Stars of the team were Fraser Wem, a 6'8" Scottish lock, captain Callum Burke, flanker Billy Harding and stand-off Zafar Ansari, an England U18 cricketer.

Skinners rugby chief Nick Oldham praised the team's dedication and workmanlike attitude. He said: "Our young squad are bursting with talent and play extremely well for each other Given that they have 15 squad members returning next year, the future looks very promising."

Outstanding players included stand-in fly half Ben Gamble, flankers Murray Galbraith-Lowe and Will de Smith and centre Harry Gilbson.
