And the Russian Football Union insist there will be no revenge attack after a Zenit St Petersburg fan was last night stabbed during a riot involving hundreds of fans in Manchester.

Trouble started in Piccadilly Gardens after a big screen due to show the UEFA Cup Final between Zenit and Rangers being held at City of Manchester Stadium failed to work. Fifteen police officers were injured and 42 arrests were made.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown slammed the rioters, while Russian authorities insist they have taken "unprecedented measures" to control English supporters next Wednesday.

"We don't want to bother the fans more than necessary. If they all behave respectfully towards one another there will be no problems," said Vitaly Mutko, president of the Russian FU and Minister for Sport.

"I will make sure there will be no revenge attacks. It is a game of festivity. Lots of things happen around it, but you cannot blame football for that."

Brown believes rioting Rangers fans could have wrecked England's bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

"What happened was a disgrace," said Brown. "It was a minority but it was completely unacceptable. I want to do everything to avoid us being in a position where we might be at risk of an application for the World Cup not being acceptable because of this."

Despite the trouble, a UEFA spokesman said Manchester did "a fantastic job" hosting the final and added: "I can't believe any other city would have done anything better."
