Ryan is rocked by Pearce's tough line
24 March 2008
The England Under 21s coach, whose team face Poland in a friendly at Wolves on Tuesday night, admits that at least one player has been penalised for off-field behaviour.
Chelsea's Ryan Bertrand, on loan at Norwich, has been overlooked in favour of Leicester's Joe Mattock as the Under 21s seek to extend an eight-game unbeaten run.
Bertrand was sent home along with club colleague Scott Sinclair and Newcastle's Andy Carroll last October after breaking a curfew with the Under 19s. And Pearce explained that the youngster's promotion had stalled because of the incident.
He said: 'In any team I have managed with the Under 21s, the code of conduct has been high on the pitch. Off it, you might look at Bertrand, who wasn't picked. Joe Mattock has stepped up behind him and now has four caps. I don't envisage having disciplinary problems.
England Under 21s (probable): Hart, Gardner, Onuoha, Shawcross, Mattock, Johnson, Cattermole, O'Hara, Surman, Jerome, Derbyshire.
