Saints swoop for Flannery

St Helens have strengthened their bid to retain their engage Super League crown with the capture of Sydney Roosters back row forward Chris Flannery.

The 27-year-old Flannery has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract taking him through to the end of the 2010 season and will link up with the champions next month, although he will not be eligible for the Challenge Cup semi-final against Bradford.

Flannery, who is still recovering from a broken leg, will fill the club's vacancy on their overseas quota created by the retirement on medical grounds of Jason Hooper earlier this year.

Saints coach Daniel Anderson said: "Chris is an ideal signing for us. He is a top drawer lock forward who can also play stand-off or centre.

"We have had a number of approaches since Jason Hooper retired earlier this season.

"Chris has nearly completed his rehab from a broken leg in pre-season and should be ready to play around mid-July, although he is unfortunately ineligible to play in the Challenge Cup."

Flannery has made 121 appearances for the Roosters.
