Sam, the MK 1 Don, sinks Roeder's Canaries with his first senior goal

Sam Baldock, the first local boy to sign on for Milton Keynes Dons, grabbed the 34th minute goal that sent Championship side Norwich crashing out of the Carling Cup.

It was Baldock's first senior goal, taken in the style of his boyhood hero Michael Owen. And he showed that new manager Roberto Di Matteo has a discovery on his hands already.

The 19-year-old Baldock was overjoyed and said: 'Because I was the first local boy to be signed on when the club was still known as Wimbledon, there is a lot of weight on my shoulders to succeed.

'But I seem to thrive on the pressure and all I want to do is score goals.

'I signed on five years ago after the scout who had taken me to Aston Villa moved to Milton Keynes.'

Baldock used to play for his dad's team in the local Milton Keynes League and he added: 'Some of the young lads who I played with now come to watch me.'

It was a shattering night for Norwich boss Glenn Roeder who was desperate to make
a good start, But they got beaten at Coventry on Saturday, and still haven't scored a goal as they slid out of the competition.

Di Matteo said: 'This result has given us confidence, and confidence can move mountains. I want the players to learn that success is sweet and they grow to like the taste of it.'

Speedy, lightly-built Baldock had already created problems for the Norwich defence and gone close a minute before he got the all -important goal.

Captain Keith Andrews, who has been linked with a move to Blackburn alongside former Dons' manager Paul Ince, laid the ball in Baldock's path and he kept calm to slide the ball past helpless keeper David Marshall. Baldock added: 'I saw the keeper go down so I just lifted the ball over him. Now this gives us a chance to face one of the big teams in the next round.'

Norwich were so poor that their only real really close effort came on 59 minutes when Lee Croft set up Darel Russell to clip the right post from 25 yards. Omar Koroma went clear just minutes before the Dons' winner but keeper Willy Gueret plunged at his feet and blocked the ball with his chest.

Roeder, who faces a huge pressure game at home to Blackpool on Saturday, said: 'It is hugely disappointing to go out at such an early stage but once again we shot ourselves in the foot by not taking one of several excellent chances in the first 15 minutes.'

But in fact Norwich were guilty of passing sideways too often and they never put the Dons under enough pressure even when they had a lot of the game in the second half.
