Samba signs long-term Rovers deal

Blackburn defender Christopher Samba was today rewarded for a string of impressive performances with a new five-year contract at Ewood Park.

Samba, 24, has become a fixture at the back after arriving from Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin for £400,000 in January.

Samba has impressed for Blackburn this season

Manager Mark Hughes said: "Chris has made a huge impact in a short time with us.

"We are delighted to have secured his services for the long term. He is clearly a young man with a big future.

"He knows a lot of hard work lies ahead but we are confident he will progress."

Chairman John Williams added: "Chris has done exceptionally well and the new contract is thoroughly deserved.

"It is also good business for the club in securing the services of a very talented player."

Samba, who has opted to play for Congo despite being born in France, said: "I am happy to extend my time at the club and want to keep performing."

Meanwhile about 6,000 fans attended Blackburn's open training session to officially launch the club's new junior membership scheme Team Rovers.

Midfielder Robbie Savage said: "If I was a kid I would have liked to have gone to see my heroes play or train.

"It was a bit strange having so many people watching us as nobody turns up at the training ground.

"You are a role model these days and the kids pick up on everything you do. So it is important that you work hard and are professional."
