Sanders' title hopes hit for Six by the HRA

Seb Sanders had a winner taken away from him yesterday that could ultimately cost him one of the most closely contested jockeys' championships in years.

While his arch-rival Jamie Spencer won on Generous Thought at Pontefract to go one clear of him on 146 winners heading into last night's Wolverhampton card, Sanders' thoughts were on the one that got away.

Yesterday, the HRA appeals panel reversed the original disqualification of Six of Diamonds, who was demoted for interfering with his mount, Gold Rush, at Bath on September 10.

A HRA statement said: "The panel noted that in the last half furlong Six of Diamonds (William Buick) had tightened up Gold Rush which caused Sanders to change his riding style.

"However, the Panel were not convinced in any way it impeded the momentum of Gold Rush, who was still given a strong ride to the line. This view was supported by Sanders in his evidence."

An angry Sanders, who was serving a one-day ban yesterday, said: "I'm not wasting a day going down there for them to take a race off me without giving my point of view. I didn't stop riding — you always keep going to the line. I said at Bath that I wasn't able to ride my horse how I wanted to and I said that again today."

Meanwhile, the HRA imposed a 12-day ban on Buick which could cost him any chance of winning the apprentices' title as well as the ride on Cambridgeshire fancy The Illies tomorrow week.

A two-day ban at Doncaster for careless riding took him over the 24-day threshold permitted over 12 months.

Buick trails Greg Fairley (47) by three wins in the apprentice's race.
