Scholes faces run-in with ref he insulted

Paul Scholes, who is one booking away from missing the Champions League Final, comes face to face in Milan on Wednesday night with the referee he is alleged to have called a f*****g poof' earlier this season.

Manchester United midfielder Scholes has been warned by manager Sir Alex Ferguson to watch his tackling against AC Milan in the semifinal second leg at the San Siro.

Scholes: 'Don't slide in', says manager Ferguson

Scholes was suspended for the 1999 Final against Bayern Munich after picking up a booking in the semi-final that year and he is desperate to make amends for the biggest disappointment of his career.

But on Monday night it emerged that Belgian referee Frank de Bleeckere will take charge of the game just seven months after he clashed with Scholes as United beat Benfica 1-0 in Lisbon.

Although the official never made a complaint of his own, Scholes was picked out on TV mouthing the insult at De Bleeckere and must now hope the referee will not make an example of him.

Ferguson said: "I have got to think of the team, so it's up to Paul Scholes to make sure he doesn't get booked.

"That, without question, is the only advice I can give him — and Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo, who go into the game on yellow cards — not to slide into tackles.

"That's where Paul gets all his bookings. In Europe, they don't accept sliding in."

Defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic will travel with United to Italy on Tuesday, as will centre forward Louis Saha.

All three players have been missing recently but will be assessed at training in the San Siro on Tuesday afternoon.

Injured Milan duo Gennaro Gattuso and Paolo Maldini both missed their team's 1-0 win at Torino on Saturday after picking up injuries in the 3-2 first leg defeat at Old Trafford last week.

Gattuso is expected to recover in time but Maldini is not.
