Schwarzer is our man, say Juventus

Juventus believe they have won the race for Middlesbrough's Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, 35, who becomes a free agent this summer.

German side Bayern Munich and Celtic are also keen on Schwarzer but Juventus claim they are the keeper's preferred destination.

Schwarzer would be second choice to Italy No 1 Gianluigi Buffon, with current back-up Emanuele Belardi moving on.

He could yet be tempted by the opportunity to be Bayern's first choice in the wake of Oliver Kahn's retirement but Juve are already celebrating his arrival.

Middlesbrough midfielder Fabio Rochemback is also on his way out after agreeing a three-year deal with former club Sporting Lisbon.

He travelled to Portugal on Tuesday to tie up the loose ends on the deal prompted by Boro's refusal to hand him a new contract.

Rochemback's departure yesterday helped Boro off-load almost £100,000-a-week in wages with Gaizka Mendieta and Dong Gook Lee also not having their contracts renewed.

Mendieta has spent the entire season training with the juniors and playing for the reserves. Gook Lee is expected to return to Japan.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate, however, is monitoring Alan Smith's situation at Newcastle. He failed to sign the unsettled striker from Manchester United last summer and would struggle to match his £62,000-a-week wages.

Boro have also enquired about Ipswich's Republic of Ireland Under 21 international midfielder Owen Garvan, 20.
