Scotland want summer showdown with England

Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith insists Scotland would be delighted to have the chance to face England next summer.

Smith is ready to tell FA counterpart Brian Barwick when the pair meet at the World Cup draw in Durban this weekend that Scotland are keen on reviving the old rivalry.

The countries have not played since the Euro 2000 play-off in 1999, which England won 2-1 on aggregate after both sides achieved away victories.

But Prime Minister Gordon Brown lent his support today to calls for a one-off home nations soccer tournament next year.

Brown was speaking after England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008 meant none of the home nations will be represented in Austria and Switzerland next summer.

And Smith welcomed the possibility of Scotland taking on England again.

He said: "It's still down to whether there's any desire for it from the English FA.

"We certainly would like to play a match against England and hopefully when we see the English counterparts over the next few days it might be a topic of conversation."
