Scott sets his sights on No 1 spot after Qatar title

Adam Scott waltzed to victory in the Qatar Masters on Sunday with a stunning final round 61 that could have major repercussions on the balance of power in European golf.

The Australian, who has now rise to fifth in the world rankings, has rejoined the European Tour after playing full time in America for five years and has his eye on winning the money list.

If he can reproduce the form he showed here, Scott is going to threaten the status of Justin Rose and Padraig Harrington, the most recent men to be crowned European No 1, and the resurgent Lee Westwood.

Scott said: 'I like to give the money list a crack. Justin proved last year you can play both tours and win it and if it becomes a possibility you can be sure I will go for it.'

Scott would have carded the first 59 in European Tour history had he eagled the last. But he chose to lay up with an iron for his second shot at the par-five hole.

He hit all 18 greens in regulation, sank 11 birdie attempts, and never had to hole more than a two-foot effort to save par.

Scott, 27, who also won here in 2002, said: 'Only occasionally do you have days like this and when they happen you have got to take full advantage.'

Westwood dug out a seven-under-par 65 to climb into fifth place and continue a revival that has seen him finish in the top 10 at nine out of his last 10 events.

Colin Montgomerie's 69 earned him sixth place and a move towards the top 50 and the place at the Masters which he so craves.

Nick Dougherty shot a 69 to finish joint seventh with David Howell, picking up around 40,000 more Ryder Cup points to go with his haul for winning the Dunhill Links.

Scottish former Ryder Cup star Andrew Coltart, playing on an invitation having lost all his playing rights, began the day second, but a 74 and his failure to sink a 20-foot birdie putt at the last left him just outside the top 10 finish he needed to start in Dubai on Thursday.
