Seeding gives Murray tough task at U.S. Open

Andy Murray's task of making an impact at the U.S. Open was made even harder today as he was seeded 19th for the tournament, which starts in New York next Monday.

Organisers kept the seedings in line with the world rankings, which was bad news for the British No1, who has been sidelined for much of the summer due to a wrist injury.

Andy Murray: staring at a tough task

Murray returned to action a fortnight ago after a three month lay-off but he then lost two of his three matches. He pulled out of this week's Pilot Pen event in New Haven in the hope of being fit for the US Open.

Roger Federer and Justine Henin were today named as top seeds for Flushing Meadows.

Federer will be bidding for his fourth consecutive title in New York while Henin is hoping to repeat her 2003 triumph. Spain's Rafael Nadal is seeded two, Serbian Novak Djokovic at three and Russian Nikolay Davydenko fourth in the men's singles.

Defending champion Maria Sharapova, of Russia, is seeded second behind Henin in the women's singles, with Serb Jelena Jankovic third and Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, the 2004 winner, fourth.

Wimbledon champion Venus Williams is 12th and her sister Serena, who has not played since the last Grand Slam event, is seeded eighth.
