Serena Williams feel-good factor as she's favourite for French Open

Serena Williams has been installed as favourite to win the French Open for the first time since 2002 following the abrupt retirement of champion Justine Henin.

Williams and her sister, Venus, have been widely criticised over the years for erratic playing schedules but both go to Roland Garros this year fit and confident.

Comeback: Serena¿s form has ensured she is favourite

"I'm enjoying the game so much now," she said.

"I've always played my own schedule and done my own thing. I'm enjoying being in Paris and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else."

The French Open is the only major title missing from new No 1 seed Maria Sharapova's record, but she admits to needing daily treatment on calf and shoulder injuries.

"Treatment is part of the everyday routine," said the Russian. "My calf injury is a new issue and something that I've never had before."

Sharapova, winner of the Australian Open, is circumspect about her chances here. "To win would be an incredible addition to my resumé - but if it's not this year, my career's not ending. I've many more years ahead of me."
