Shamed star is told to pay Blues £9.5m

Adrian Mutu was today ordered by FIFA to pay £9.5million to Chelsea for testing positive for cocaine in 2004.

The ruling is a huge blow for the Romanian, who is preparing in the Swiss mountains for next Monday's match with France at Euro 2008, although the striker's lawyer insisted he will not pay a penny.

Chelsea bought Mutu from Parma in 2003 for £15m and let him go for nothing the following year after traces of cocaine were found after the club's own test.

He was suspended from all football for the next seven months and the Blues asked for £13m in compensation - a figure based on his transfer value and loss of income.

The Premier League ruled that Mutu's misconduct was a unilateral breach of contract without just cause and, in December 2005, an appeal filed by Mutu against the League's decision was dismissed.

FIFA made today's ruling after the Court of Arbitration for Sport found in May 2007 that the world football governing body should decide Mutu's fine.

The striker is now playing for Fiorentina and his lawyer, Cristian Sarbu, insisted his client would contest the fine in civil court and said Mutu would not pay any compensation until all legal avenues had been exhausted.

"People should understand that this is a decision taken by a sporting tribunal," said Sarbu.

"After this is final, this decision can be taken to a civil court.

"This is all he needs at the moment."
