Sharapova serves up Severine defeat

Maria Sharapova signalled her intent to regain the Wimbledon title as she disposed of stubborn Frenchwoman Severine Bremond in straight sets to book her place in the third round.

The 2004 champion produced some superb tennis as she breezed through the opening set 6-0, before then having to maintain focus to eventually see off the challenge of the world number 37 in an hour and 17 minutes on Centre Court.

Japan's Ai Sugiyama, the 26th seed, awaits in the third round - but following what was another impressive showing, it will take someone special to stop the young Russian in her quest to regain the Wimbledon crown.

Sharapova, the world number two and second seed, had a chance to force an early service break in the very first game of the match.

The 20-year-old converted at the second attempt, following a long return, the Frenchwoman having used an unsuccessful Hawk-Eye challenge on her serve.

Only a sparse crowd had initially remained on Centre Court after the defeat of British number one Tim Henman earlier this afternoon - with a solitary spectator in the Royal Box.

Sharapova, though, did not seem bothered at all, as she forced two more breaks and moved 5-0 ahead against the world number 37.

Bremond - a quarter-finalist here last year - then had three break chances herself in game six following some casual unforced errors by Sharapova.

However, the former world number one saved them all before promptly closing out the set 6-0.

Sharapova, runner-up at the Australian Open and beaten semi-finalist at Ronald Garros, continued to pile on the pressure at the start of the second set.

It took more than 10 minutes to settle the opening game, after Bremond saved several break chances.

But it was only delaying the inevitable, as Sharapova secured the upper hand with another perfectly-placed return to the corner.

To her credit, Bremond did not throw in the towel, and the Russian certainly had to work for a 4-2 lead.

However, the straight-sets victory eventually came as Sharapova, following another break in game nine, closed out the match 6-0 6-3.
