Shaun set for £10m switch to Pompey after dad Ian tells him to leave Chelsea

Fatherly influence: Shaun Wright-Phillips of Chelsea has been told to leave The Bridge by his dad

Shaun Wright-Phillips is set for a £10million move to Portsmouth - after his father Ian last night told him to quit Chelsea.

The former Manchester City winger, signed for £21m back in 2004, has seen his career nosedive since moving to the Blues and has dropped completely out of the England reckoning.

Arsenal and England legend Wright now wants his son to leave Chelsea, regardless of new boss Luiz Felipe Scolari's plans, according to The Sun.

And Harry Redknapp has made it clear he wants to take Wright-Phillips to Fratton Park if the price is right. Wright said: "Portsmouth would be a good move for Shaun.

He's won a lot of medals and has done well at Chelsea. But he could go somewhere like Portsmouth and resurrect his career.

Shaun can get people talking about him again like they used to when he was at City.

'He's only shown flashes of what he can do at Chelsea. But if he's playing regularly, I think he can light up the Premier League again because he's a quality player.

'And I'm not just saying that because he's my son. Technically, he's a very good footballer with a lot of drive and passion, and he works very hard for the team.

'I told him two years ago to leave Chelsea because I couldn't see the end of the rainbow for him.

'I could only see him getting sporadic starts and you can't do that at his age.

'Shaun is 26 now and being at a club like Portsmouth, where he's going to play regularly, will boost him.

'He willl also get back in the England squad on merit, instead of being there just because he's at a big club. Regardless of what happens now Phil Scolari is in charge, I personally think Shaun should leave Chelsea.'

Redknapp, who has already helped former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe back into the England squad, has already made his position clear on his admiration for Wright-Phillips.

He said: 'Shaun would be a hit at Portsmouth - the fans would love him. He's my type of player, but the problem is whether we can afford him and his wages.'

Redknapp is ready to switch his attention to £2m-rated Lens defender Nadir Belhadj, 26, after fearing he is being priced out of a move for left-back Nicky Shorey.

Shorey, 27, is desperate to get away from Reading - but Portsmouth have been put off by the Championship club's £4m valuation of the England defender.
