Shearer admits: One day I do want to manage Newcastle - but I've not spoken to Keegan about it

Alan Shearer says he has not spoken to Kevin Keegan for "a long time" after the duo were mooted as Newcastle United's managerial "dream ticket."

More Magpies news

Following Sam Allardyce's departure last week, a Shearer-Keegan combination appears to be a popular option for the Newcastle faithful.

On Monday, Keegan declined to confirm an interest in returning to St James' Park, merely outlining his "love" for the Magpies.

Now Shearer, upon his return to the country from holiday, also did not expand on the rumours linking him with a role at Newcastle.

When asked about a dream team with Keegan, Shearer told Sky Sports News: "I haven't spoken to Kevin for a long time."

Regarding any interest in becoming the Magpies' next manager, the former England captain only reiterated his wish to "one day" be in charge of his boyhood club.

He said: "Am I wanting it? One day, hopefully."

Shearer was signed for Newcastle by Keegan from Blackburn Rovers in 1996 and retired from playing football in 2006.

Keegan remains the bookmakers' favourite for the job after Harry Redknapp rejected the chance to replace Allardyce, while there has been support for former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier.
