Sheffield United chairman McCabe hands a reprieve to Robson

Sheffield United chairman Kevin McCabe last night pleaded with irate fans to give manager Bryan Robson one last chance to salvage the club's season.

McCabe is refusing to cave in to calls to axe his manager after last week's humbling by Sheffield Wednesday but fans have threatened an anti-Robson protest before Sunday's FA Cup fourth-round clash at home to Manchester City.

Final chance: Bryan Robson has received the dreaded vote of confidence

McCabe has told his manager that League results must pick up, starting with Tuesday's visit of Watford.

He said: "It's got to start now. I had a one-to-one with Bryan in Brussels on Monday. He feels he can put it right. I feel it can be done by him working a bit harder with this team. He's got a bit more time.

"Bryan believes we should turn that corner and turn it now. No-one doubts that our squad is good enough to be a lot higher in this division. We can't go on like this for much longer."

After the Hillsborough defeat, Robson controversially suggested he couldn't go on with some of the players he inherited. McCabe is willing to excuse this outburst but expects his manager to be more diplomatic at his media conference today.

"Sometimes managers are caught out after a game when emotions are high," said McCabe. "Words can be uttered that are out of place. I think Bryan will go on to explain it better.

"Let's not have fans protesting. That doesn't help us at all. I'm not one to chop and change.

"We've got this hiccup which is very frustrating and disappointing but I don't want anyone to get it out of context."
