Sheik has Dewhurst in sights

Godolphin's late season surge - 12 winners in the last fortnight - has given Sheik Mohammed the confidence to launch a strong raid on Champions' Day at Newmarket on Saturday.

Godolphin will today supplement Creachadoir, at a cost of £24,000, to the Champion Stakes.

Creachadoir won the Group Three Joel Stakes nine days ago.

On the same card, the Sheik is also targeting the season's top two-year-old race, the Dewhurst Stakes, with three of his finest juveniles.

Jim Bolger's New Approach, in whom he has a 50 per cent stake, heads the betting for the Group One contest at 7-4.

He looks like facing Godolphin's Rio De La Plata (3-1), who was second to New Approach in the National Stakes and will be Godolphin's first runner in the Dewhurst since 2004.

Champagne Stakes winner McCartney, who is trained by Mark Johnston and carries the Sheik's maroon and white silks, is 10-1 while the Sheik's son, Sheik Hamdan, now owns Fast Company (8-1). Only John Gosden's unbeaten Raven's Pass (3-1) appears able to prevent a Sheik-related victory.

The rival Coolmore team do not appear to have a live candidate for the Dewhurst and look more intent on targeting the Racing Post Trophy later this month.
