Sheva hopes dashed as Milan go for Eto'o

Andriy Shevchenko's hopes of a return to AC Milan ended today when the Italian club confirmed they will try to buy Samuel Eto'o this summer.

The Ukraine striker has endured a tough time following his £30.8million move to Chelsea 12 months ago, failing to reproduce the form which made him such a success during seven years at the San Siro.

Despite his disappointing campaign, Chelsea have told AC Milan they will keep Shevchenko and are not even prepared to let the Italians have him back on loan.

Milan appear to have taken the message on board as they have now revealed their top transfer target is Barcelona striker Eto'o, who has also been linked with Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United.

The Serie A club are searching for a forward after announcing they are willing to sell Italy international Alberto Gilardino for £16m.

"Milan will make an official request to Barcelona after the end of the Spanish league," the Italians said in a statement.

The club added it has not reached an agreement with Barcelona, and that the Catalan club "holds the final decisions" on any transfer of the 26-year-old Cameroon international.

Earlier, AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani had suggested that Shevchenko believes his move to Chelsea was a mistake.

Galliani said: "Sheva is part of the history of Milan and he's saddened to have left. Has Shevchenko told me that he regrets it? I will not answer that."
