Shoaib debate delays Pakistan's Champions Trophy squad release

The Pakistan Cricket Board has postponed the announcement of the probable squad for the Champions Trophy due to a dispute over Shoaib Akhtar's status.

The Lahore High Court last week suspended the 18-month ban on Shoaib - already reduced from a career-threatening five-year suspension - until a final decision can be reached in September.

That leaves him free to play at present and he was included on the unsubmitted 30-man list of probables picked for the Champions Trophy. However, it is understood that the PCB is demanding that the player pay a seven million rupee fine before they approve his inclusion.

A PCB spokesman told reporters that the PCB had obtained permission from the ICC to delay the announcement of the team.

Today was the deadline for teams to formally announce their probables list, but Pakistan will now name their squad on Monday.

PCB chief operating officer Shafqat Naghmi declined to comment on the Shoaib issue except to say more would be known on the issue when the team is announced.

"The selectors have picked the team," Naghmi said.

"Now it has to be approved by the governing body as per PCB rules. We have permission to name the team by July 15, but we could name the team earlier too."

Reacting to news reports, Shoaib's lawyer Abid Hasan Minto said Shoaib had not been asked to pay the fine until now.

"Unless they tell him to pay the fine how can he move forward because the case is still under consideration of the court," he said.

Minto also said the court had not said if Shoaib did not pay the fine he cannot be considered for Pakistan duty.
