Shorey to tie the knot just hours after first taste of England duty

Nicky Shorey is looking forward to the weekend of a lifetime when he joins the England squad for the friendly against Brazil and then gets married the following day.

The Reading defender, a surprise inclusion in Steve McClaren's 26-man squad for two important matches in June, had feared that he would be forced into making a choice.

But after talking things over with his fiancee, Emily Bailey, and McClaren, the player that his manager Steve Coppell describes as the club's best-kept secret' will follow one big day with another.

The left-back, signed from Leyton Orient for just £25,000 by former manager Alan Pardew, earned his call-up after impressing on his debut for England B against Albania on Friday night.

Shorey, 26, is thrilled that his chance to become the first Reading player for 101 years to represent England — following Herbert Smith in 1906 — has not been wrecked.

"I'm just delighted," he said. "I can't really believe it. It will probably only be when we meet up and I start training with the lads that it will sink in."

Shorey had delayed worrying about his wedding date clashing with an England call-up until the situation became a reality.

"I should be all right," he said. "We'll have the Brazil game on the Friday and then hopefully I can have a bit of time off before we go out to Estonia.

"I spoke to Steve McClaren and he said we can work around it. It's not a problem for my fiancee, either. She's just delighted I'm in the squad. I've been quite fortunate with the timing because if the game had been on Saturday it would have been tricky."

As he will rejoin the England squad soon after the wedding, Shorey will delay his honeymoon until later in the summer. And he conceded that his stag night was not going to be the riotous affair that some of his mates had planned.

"It's going to be a lot quieter than it otherwise might have been," said Shorey. "I'll meet up with the lads and have a bite to eat and then go home and leave them to it."

The recall of David Beckham will bring extra attention to the matches which Shorey, a quiet character off the pitch, does not expect to affect him.

"It will be an honour to be in the same squad as David," said Shorey. "The man is not only a great player, he's a great professional as well. His return has heightened the publicity around the game even more but, from my point of view, it will just be nice to go out and train with players of that stature.

"The Brazil game could not be a better showpiece in the new Wembley and I'm sure every fan in England will be tuning in to watch.

"Ashley Cole and Wayne Bridge are ahead of me but it will be nice to train with the full squad even if I'm not in the games. It really all leads up to the all-important game in Estonia, which is one we have to win."

Shorey grew up near West Ham's training ground at Chadwell Heath and has been linked with a move to the East End club.

He said: "I'm just thinking about England. After the honeymoon I'll sit down with Reading and see where we go from there."
