Sick Shepherd goes from hero to zero

Kirk Shepherd, who became the youngest ever finalist in the PDC World Darts Championship last year, suffered a sickening first-round exit this time.

The 22-year-old Kent-born player lost 3-2 to world No23 Jan van der Rassel, from Holland.

Shepherd wasted a chance to take the match at Alexandra Palace, and Van der Rassel capitalised with a 106 checkout.

"I feel sick," admitted Shepherd. "I was confident that I was going to win, as I have beaten Jan the two times we have met before."
