Simon can’t believe his good fortune

Just six months after losing his Tour card, Simon Khan recorded the best win of his career at Wentworth yesterday to put himself into Ryder Cup contention.

Khan claimed the £637,000 prize money for winning the BMW PGA Championship, moved up 365 places in the world rankings to 106th and raised the possibility of an unexpected Ryder Cup debut.

The 37-year-old Englishman only had one top-10 finish last season and had slumped to 471st in the world before yesterday's incredible victory saw Khan become the first player to win the event from seven shots behind going into the final round.

"I love the Tour so much so to lose your card . . . that was the worst I've ever felt," he said. "This has got to be the best, without a doubt.

"It's what I have always dreamed of doing. It is as much for my family as it is for me — it's unbelievable to be standing here now. This means everything.

"This tournament is the reason I started playing golf and just being here is special this year."

The win ensures Khan now has a five-year Tour exemption and a place in the next three Open Championships.
