Simon sends Fed packing in Shanghai

Gilles Simon caused a big upset at the Masters Cup today by defeating four-times champion Roger Federer in Shanghai.

The Frenchman, a late replacement for injured world No1 Rafael Nadal, hit back from one set and a break down in the second to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

There were doubts over Federer's fitness after a back injury forced him to pull out of the Paris Masters two weeks ago. But the 27-year-old Swiss showed few signs of discomfort as he took the opening set in 41 minutes.

Simon, ranked No9, beat Federer in their only previous meeting at the Canada Masters earlier this year. Today Simon, 24, finished the match by serving an ace.
