Simpson and Jones both facing the axe

Preston manager Paul Simpson and Cardiff's Dave Jones face the sack on Tuesday. Simpson's fate will be sealed when the club's board meets, with Jones likely to go once Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale completes talks with his directors.

Jones, who may be reprieved if Cardiff are unable to afford to pay the remaining 18 months of his contract, said: 'People should stick by people. If you look at the League it is littered with teams getting rid of managers and having to start again.'

Cardiff are keen on Colchester's Geraint Williams but may be put off by having to pay compensation, allowing Gary McAllister to come into the picture.

High on Preston chairman Derek Shaw's list of candidates will be Steve Cotterill, who left Burnley last week.

The Burnley board meet on Wednesday to discuss his replacement. Peter Reid, Mike Newell and Willie Donachie have applied for the job.
