Sir Bobby Robson is braced for retirement

Former England and Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson has admitted his near six-decade involvement in football could come to a close after the Republic of Ireland's clash with Wales tomorrow.

Robson, 74, who has been troubled by ill-health, has been working with the Irish as a football consultant since January 2006 when Steve Staunton took over as manager from Brian Kerr.

Staunton was relieved of his post last month after a disappointing Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

Although Robson continued in his overseeing role, he will cease to be involved after the Group D clash at the Millennium Stadium.

Robson revealed in May that he had been diagnosed with cancer for the fifth time in 15 years and he concedes that the illness could get in the way of him accepting another job in the game.

He said: "I'm stepping down because of Stan (Staunton). The chances are I won't get back on the pitch again but I've got my head still and my enthusiasm.

"It depends on my health - I miss the game immensely and getting on the pitch.

"I've enjoyed the last two years - I just wish I could have done more than I have done. But my health took a downward turn a year ago and I've just been recovering from that."

As well as his work with England, Ireland and Newcastle, Robson enjoyed successful coaching stints at Ipswich, PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon, Porto and Barcelona.

He also played for Fulham and West Brom and won 20 caps for England.
