Smith anger at fixture planners

Great Britain and Leeds coach Tony Smith has launched an attack on rugby league's fixture planners after his side threw away their lead and unbeaten home record in the 20-18 defeat by Wigan on Tuesday night.

After snatching victory from Bradford's grasp in the opening Easter fixture last Thursday, Leeds got a taste of their own medicine when Wigan struck in the dying moments after leading 18-16.

Fixtures broadside: Tony Smith

Australian Smith, in his seventh season in the English game, blamed the schedule for his side's finish and intends to lobby for a change to the fixture format once he becomes full-time at the RFL in October.

He said: "This game is not made for playing a few days apart. The fixture we had on Thursday took a lot out of us. We looked like a fatigued team with our decision-making at times.

"That's what you're going to get if you play rugby league within a few days of each other."

He argues every effort must be made to reduce the workload on the country's leading players if Great Britain are to close the gap on Australia.

A total of 76,665 fans watched the second half of the Easter programme, breaking the previous record aggregate for a round of Super League fixtures of 69,830 set in 2005.
