Smith claims the wind of change will lift Watford

Watford failed to get off to a winning start under new manager Brendan Rodgers but Tommy Smith has noticed a turnaround in morale at Vicarage Road.

Smith scored Watford's goal in a 1-1 draw with bottom club Doncaster and is confident they will pull away from the Championship relegation zone.

"When a manager leaves some players get a lift," he said. "Others are disappointed. It's a real mix.

"But when someone new comes in with fresh ideas, it lifts you and I think that's what has happened."

Crystal Palace defender Jose Fonte was not particularly impressed by Queens Park Rangers after their goalless draw at Selhurst Park.

"This must be the hardest league in the world because anybody can beat anybody," Fonte said. "Even though QPR have lots of money, I'm not surprised they are not standing out."

Charlton were held 0-0 at home by Southampton but caretaker boss Phil Parkinson said: "We needed to show more character and in the last two games we've seen a lot more resilience."
