Smith thwarted over Pompey's Taylor as Cousin talks up exit again

Sportsmail understands Rangers manager Walter Smith has so far been thwarted in an attempt to sign expensive Portsmouth left-back Matt Taylor.

Rangers made an inquiry to the Premiership club about the £3m Englishman, who can also play in midfield but Pompey boss Harry Redknapp is reluctant to sell.

Striker Daniel Cousin is hitting form in the title race but he continues to talk up an exit off the pitch.

Cousin again spoke at the weekend of his desire to play in the Premiership.

But Rangers maintain that an exit clause in his contract will only apply at the end of the season, and not in January, leaving boss Smith in control of that particular situation.
